NATURAL SWIMMING PONDS



'Natural Swimming Ponds' or 'Natural Swimming Pools' as they are also called, are a chemical free alternative to a chlorine swimming pool. The water is kept clear, clean and free of harmful bacteria by the circulation through a planted 're-generation area'. The clean water and aquatic plants enhance any setting.

Michael Littlewood, a Landscape Architect and environmental planner, has written the definitive guide for the design and implementation of these sustainable schemes entitled 'Natural Swimming Pools' (Schiffer, £28, h/b, 232pp ISBN 0 7643 2183 8).

I have also designed a number of these type of pools for Aqua Swimming Ponds Ltd. There are a limited number of businesses in this country which can offer 'Design and Build' services. A google search will get you a comprehensive listing.

I have spent August 2006 visiting a selection of Natural swimming ponds in Austria. The photographs below represent my own attempts to capture some of the beauty of these places.
